Family Meeting After 178 Years

It was a happy coincidence when Mr. Bernhard Börner from Wittenberge visited our home page on the 7th of March 2002. According to his guest book entry, his ancestors also came from Hildebrandshausen. Could it be that coincidence, genealogy’s  best friend, has brought a descendant from Johann Georg Börner to our side?

Mr Börner is also a family genealogist, until now concentrating on the Wittenberge/Elbe area, and he has traced his lineage back to an ancestor of the same name - Bernhard Börner. After comparing our lineage’s per email, no match was discovered, only that his forebears also came from Hildebrandshausen.

I wrote to the local ministry kindly asking them to find out what they could about the ancestors of this Bernhard Börner. Some time later the parson sent me the following information:

- Bernhard Börners birth date was registered by Father      Bernhard Grimm as 15.01.1846. Noted as his parents were Johannes Börner & Magdalena Grimm.

-The parents from Johannes Börner were noted as

Johann Wilhelm Börner & Anna Elisabeth Morganthal.

-Bernhard Börner also took a wife from the Grimm family,  Margaretha Grimm ( * 14.05.1852 in Klein Brese +13.08.1898 in Hamburg). Her fathers name was Georg Grimm.

A Georg Grimm was named as the godfather at the baptism of the ninth child from Johannes Börner & Magdalena Grimm, in the village of Friesack, which lies roughly 30 km south east from Wittenberge. This man could be the same above mentioned G. Grimm, i.e. the brother from Magdelena and the father from Margaretha Grimm. Further research is necessary.

J. W. Börner and A. E. Morgenthal are also the registered parents of my ancestor Nicolaus Börner of the Hanover Börner line. So it can be established that Johannes and Nicolaus Börner are brothers. Sometime before 1850, the brothers left Hildebrandshausen  to start a new life someplace else.

Research also shows that J.W. Börner and A.E. Morgenthal had at least one daughter, who moved from Hildesbrandshausen to Lehmkuhl, which is near Havelberg, after the death of her husband Georg Montag. At least 2 children came from this marriage (one of which was illegitimate,b.7.01.1852).  According to the Havelberg/Lehmkuhl parish register, she married the widower Nicolaus Berendshausen, who also, in all probability came from Hildesbrandshausen, on the 1st Nov. 1865. After that the trail is lost.

This newly discovered family connection is really delightful. It is always a pleasure for genealogists when another branch of the family tree is discovered. So it was that after roughly 178 years, the descendants of the brothers Johannes and Nicolaus Börner decided to arrange a meeting.

Certainly our common research could lead to the rediscovery of long lost branches of our family. This in turn, could lead to a big family reunion in Hildebrandshausen. We will see.
